SARASOTA, Fla. (June 17, 2016) – For Heather Williams, having a successful accounting career represents only a fraction of her overall life plan. Fortunately for USF Sarasota-Manatee, this USF alum (Class of ’02) is making time for the classroom, too.
When not managing estates, trusts and tax services at Sarasota-based firm Kerkering Barberio & Co., Williams, 36, serves as an adjunct accounting instructor at USFSM.
Her volunteer efforts aren’t limited to USFSM students, though.
She’s also a mentor at Kerkering Barberio and a board member for the 40 Carrots Family Center, a non-profit parent education and early childhood-development center in Lakewood Ranch. Plus, previously she chaired the Young Leaders Alliance for the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance.
For these efforts and others, Williams has been named the 2016 Young Professional of the Year by the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.
“I’m very honored and humbled to receive such an award,” said Williams, who won during a June 3 luncheon of the 2016 Frank G. Berlin Sr. Small Business Awards. “I was elated when I won.”
A mother of three, Williams said she’s all about giving back, whether that means working with young parents, mentoring employees or teaching a classroom of aspiring CPAs. This fall will mark her second anniversary teaching entry-level accounting to USFSM sophomores and juniors.
“It doesn’t feel like work to me,” Williams said of the experience. “To me, it’s fun. I enjoy trying to make accounting interesting and meaningful. I try to find real-world examples of what accountants actually do, how they help people.”
USF alum named Bank of America local market president
Kudos to Bank of America executive Mike McCoy, who this week was named president of the Sarasota-Manatee market.
“Mike’s demonstrated leadership and roots in this market will ensure we’re helping to make our customers’ and clients’ financial lives better, through the power of every connection we can make with them,” said Brian Moynihan, chief executive officer at Bank of America.
McCoy, who earned his MBA at USF, is an active supporter of USF Sarasota-Manatee.
In addition to serving on the Brunch on the Bay Committee, he is a member of USFSM’s Community Leadership Council, which advises campus leadership and the campus board.
