Lighting…Is one of the most important design elements for a space, yet it is often overlooked. You could have the best home on the water with the most amazing views, but if you don’t have enough light, after the sun sets, you may be struggling to read a book! Why? It’s because the importance of good lighting is downplayed during the design phase! (I may be a little partial on the subject, as my prior experience involved lighting design; everyone always wants you to just plug in a lamp!)
We had a consultation this week for a new condo that could have fallen “victim” to this lack of light. The floor plan and functionality of the space looked pretty good…but…there was a huge “elephant in the room” that we noticed right away! There was only recessed lighting in the kitchen! REALLY?! So…what’s the moral of the story here? Don’t forget to look at the lighting! LED recessed lighting is definitely the way to go, especially in condos, because you can install them with minimal ceiling height (and they are dimmable)! However, it doesn’t stop there. Don’t overlook the color temperature! If anyone says “daylight” is the way to go for the color, run as fast as you can in the opposite direction! Daylight is meant for outside! Stick to 3,000k (Kelvin) or less inside your home, or things might just look weird (and we don’t want that). And…don’t worry about installing “too much” light, because all you have to do is turn it off! What if you have an existing condo, you may ask? Not to worry! We have a little trick for that… but you will have to call us to find out!
