To keep…or not to keep…that is the question! If you have an architectural element that adds character and charm to the space, why not leave it when renovating? Some of you may be thinking, “what are you talking about?! That sounds ridiculous.” Well, hear me out. All it may need is a fresh twist (it being something like an existing fireplace)! I was at a consultation earlier this week where the home had a beautiful existing brick fireplace and hearth. Yes, it did look dated, but that doesn’t mean it should be completely wiped out. Why not white wash or paint the brick and add a nice live edge piece of wood to the hearth? This not only refreshes the look of the fireplace, but maintains the existing character of the home! Don’t like the idea of painting the brick? Then don’t! Just clean it up (if necessary) and update the space around it! Add a crisp coat of paint to the walls, interject some modern furniture, compliment the fireplace by adding something fun and unique to the room…you get the idea. So…what you have done is updated the space while maintaining the charm (don’t pretend like you all haven’t seen Fixer Upper!).
So, what would this look like…in real life…you may ask? Well, funny you should mention it! Here is a pic of one of our recent projects. The fireplace is original (I mean the stone too!) and we updated the space around it!
