Lakewood Ranch, Fla. — After spending their entire lives – growing up, starting careers and raising their family – in and around the Big Apple, Anne and Bob Burke traded their hectic city lives for the good life some 1,200 miles south at the Del Webb Lakewood Ranch community.
The Burkes, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, are the first residents to move into Del Webb Lakewood Ranch, the only 55+ active adult community within the renowned 17,500-acre Lakewood Ranch – part of a former timber ranch – in unincorporated Manatee County.
But, the master-planned community isn’t entirely new to the active couple. They rented a house the past two winters at The Moorings at Lakewood Ranch before deciding to purchase a Del Webb home.
“We really love this community and Our Lady of the Angels, a nearby Catholic church,” Anne said. “And, when we walked into the Serenity model we instantly knew we wanted it.”
Their new abode – a 1,542-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath home – has everything they were looking for: tile roof, paver driveway, coffered ceilings, and a flex room, as well as low-emission, energy-saving windows and R-30 insulation.
The staff at Lakewood Ranch was eager to see the Burkes move in and recently welcomed them with fanfare and a welcome banner stretched across their garage, according Josh Graeve, vice president of sales for Del Webb’s Southwest Florida division.
“We are excited to celebrate and welcome the Burkes as our first residents. It’s important to us that the Burkes – and many other new residents calling Del Webb home – are happy with their new home,” said Josh Graeve, vice president of sales for Del Webb. “We are proud that the lifestyle is also up and running with our full time lifestyle director, Amy Vleck,” he added.
The Burkes, who have five grown children and seven grandchildren, also chose the area to be near good friends and some of their family members.
“We have friends who live in Venice and a daughter and son-in-law who live in Sarasota for half of the year,” Bob said. “Our 8th grandchild is due in July.”
Bob, 77, is a semi-retired certified public accountant from the Bronx, and Anne, 74, retired in 2013 after 20 years as a gerontologist, working in the adult day care field. She grew up on Long Island.
The couple hopes to immerse themselves in their new community and maybe even take up some of the hobbies they had in New York. “Bob is a model train enthusiast and I sing with the North Fork Chorale,” Anne said.
Once they’re settled in, Anne said they plan to be regulars at the café, pool and gym at the Lakewood Ranch clubhouse.
Anne summed up plans for their future at Lakewood Ranch: “We really look forward to spending more time in the Del Webb community activities, getting to know our new neighbors and just enjoying retired life.”
Del Webb Lakewood Ranch’s Sales Center is located at 6805 Del Webb Blvd. Lakewood Ranch, FL 32802.
