Keep Saint Petersburg Local and The Greenhouse present BurgBorn, an event celebrating St. Pete’s success stories. Get inspired by these BurgBorn individuals and businesses that have received national and international recognition. Learn from their journeys. Celebrate their success stories.
Opening remarks will be made by Mayor Rick Kriseman. The keynote speaker is Producer Will Packer, who has established himself as one of Hollywood’s blockbuster hit makers and is one of the only African American producers in the world who has had eight of their films open number one at the box office. Collectively, his films have grossed nearly $1 billion. Packer is also the Executive Producer of “Roots,” a remake of one of the most celebrated TV programs of all time that will premiere on Memorial Day on The History Channel, A&E and Lifetime networks; as well as ABC’s upcoming comedy series “Uncle Buck,” that will premiere on June 14. Mr. Packer was born in St. Pete and will be introduced by Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin, who went to school with him.
The conference portion of the event will run from 10 am to 4 pm, with a networking social from 4-7 pm (a VIP Breakfast with Mr. Packer will take place from 9:00-9:45 am). The diverse speakers are from a variety of industries (arts, tech, online business and craft beverages/food – see website for bios and schedule). They and/or their businesses were “born” in St. Pete and have achieved national and international recognition. The moderator is Sandra Gadsden, former editor of the Tampa Bay Times and recent graduate of The Iron Yard. During breaks, attendees will be able to connect with The Greenhouse, an entrepreneurship and small business assistance center offering training, consultation, liaison services, networking, promotion, and which manages the Small Business Enterprise program.
“We are so incredibly proud to co-present this event with The Greenhouse,” says Olga Bof, Keep Saint Petersburg Local (KSPL) Founder/Executive Director. “It allows us to learn from and celebrate the amazing individuals and businesses that were born in St. Pete and have gone on to scale great heights. We hope that the fierce city pride we’ve helped to instill will swell even more upon hearing these success stories. BurgBorn will demonstrate what we’ve championed since KSPL launched – that local doesn’t have to equal small. We rejoice when a BurgBorn individual/business grows and thrives.” Jessica Eilerman, Manager of The Greenhouse, as well as the Small Business Liaison & Mayor’s Maker Liaison for the Office of the Mayor of St. Petersburg, says, “Telling the stories of our local businesses and how they started and grew in St. Pete is so important – not just for defining who we are as a city for entrepreneurship, but for helping to spur others to dream big and grow their dreams. We are pleased to be working with Keep Saint Petersburg Local on BurgBorn. Make plans to come out to learn more about what’s happening in your backyard and be prepared to be inspired!”
We are also working with the city’s Director of Education & Community Engagement, local churches and other community organizations to identify students who will be provided with free tickets so this event can also serve as inspiration for them.
