Brandon, Florida (May 16, 2016) – Brandon Regional Hospital recently announced that nurse Joyce Sankey, charge nurse in Labor & Delivery, was honored as the hospital’s Nurse of the Year. Donovan Tapper, MD, was selected as Physician of the Year. Ms. Sankey and Dr. Tapper were both recognized at Brandon Regional Hospital’s first annual Nursing Gala that was held on April 27, 2016. The event was designed to recognize the significant accomplishments that Brandon Regional Hospital’s nurses and medical staff have made. Both Ms. Sankey and Dr. Tapper were chosen for their dedication to patients and for the dedication to helping Brandon Regional Hospital fulfill its vision of being the destination of exceptional care.
Joyce Sankey, RN, received multiple nominations from both coworkers and physicians who regarded her as knowledgeable, organized, and supportive to both staff and physicians. “Joyce has dedicated all her life to taking care of patients at Brandon Regional Hospital. Each and every day, she gives her all and is an outstanding leader for the rest of the nurses in Labor and Delivery,” said one physician. “She always has the best of the patients at heart,” said another physician. “She is always available and with her safety is a key,” said another physician. Other physicians recognized her as a problem solver, game changer, and a person who is always available to them. Her peers recognized her as an exceptional leader who is organized and supportive. “She is irreplaceable as a charge nurse in Labor and Delivery,” said one nomination.
Donovan Tapper, MD, was also recognized by his peers and staff as someone who embraces change and is always positive. “Dr. Tapper exemplifies every characteristic listed for this consideration; he is extremely caring and adored by his patients and nurses as well,” said one nomination. Dr. Tapper is known for his meticulous care of patients and his surgical skills and devoted follow up. “He collaborates with the nursing staff to ensure the highest level of professionalism. He is a team member who demonstrates sincere compassion towards patients and family,” said another nomination.
Dr. Donovan Tapper has been a board certified general surgeon since 2000. Prior to coming to the Brandon area, Dr. Tapper enjoyed a successful career in the United States Air Force where he was able to receive all of his education and medical training. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio while on duty in the US Air Force. He continued his military service while attending medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He then completed his general surgery residency training in San Antonio, Texas, at Wilford Hall, USAF Medical Center. While in the service Dr. Tapper’s experiences included performing surgery in war zones as well as in humanitarian disaster areas in Africa. During his assignment in Tampa Dr. Tapper completed a fellowship in minimally invasive and advanced GI surgery at the University of South Florida.
