Technical difficulties on GiveDay.org did not stop local Give Day from setting record
Tampa, FL (May 10, 2016) – A total of $2.08 million was raised during Give Day Tampa Bay, the 24-hour giving challenge on May 3, the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay announced today. This is over $250,000 more than was raised last year ($1.74 million), even though technical difficulties dramatically slowed down the online donations platform for much of the afternoon.
“It has been a challenging week, but we are excited to announce that after all the donations were calculated, the totals not only reached last year’s numbers, but surpassed them,” said Marlene Spalten, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay.
Technical difficulties began around 11 a.m. on GiveDay.org, as a high volume of donations began to come in for Give Day events around the country. Because of the issues, Give Day events in a number of other cities were either cut short or altered. But the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, which runs Give Day Tampa Bay, quickly came up with an alternate online donation website for Tampa Bay donors.
“We want to thank everyone who participated in Give Day – nonprofits, sponsors, media partners, donors, and the local media – for being patient with us as we worked through the challenges created by the technology issues,” Spalten said. “Obviously, the event did not go as smoothly as we had hoped and we are sorry for any inconvenience these issues had on our participating nonprofits and those trying to donate.”
A prize pool of nearly $80,000 gave nonprofits a chance to win monetary prizes during Give Day based on the day’s donations. Some of the prizes were based on overall donations, while others were set to be randomly distributed. However, because of the issues with giveday.org, several of the prizes had to be manually calculated, such as the most dollars raised by both a large and small nonprofit, and the awards for the most donations in each of the categories.
The other categories of prizes, which were to be based on the time of day or awarded randomly, could not be awarded as originally intended. As a result, the Community Foundation randomly chose those winners among all participating nonprofits.
A list of each nonprofit’s total Give Day donations, along with all Give Day prize winners, can be found here.
