TAMPA, Fla. – Dozens of military personnel and civilians gathered at a dedication ceremony Friday to mark the completion of an 8,000-square-foot Florida Army National Guard facility at MacDill Air Force Base, built by Halfacre Construction Company (HalfacreConstruction.com), the area’s oldest, most established, locally owned and operated private commercial construction company.
Halfacre Construction Company served as the construction manager and Bhide & Hall Architects as the designer of the building project. Halfacre Construction Company project manager Tom Rees and superintendent Ralph Rush attended the dedication, along with architects E. Wendell Hall and Bryan Sawyer.
“It was a pleasure to work with this unit,” Rush said. “They made us feel like family.”
The Special Operations Detachment – Central (SOD-C) facility was built for the Florida Army National Guard and includes offices, administrative space and storage space. The building is the sixth project Halfacre Construction Company has completed at MacDill, including Tinker Elementary School.
During the facility dedication, Col. John Pelleriti, Special Operations Detachment – Central commander, personally thanked Halfacre Construction Company.
“This is a big day for Special Operations Detachment – Central,” Pelleriti said. “Halfacre was great to work with, and we appreciate your professional attitude and your high quality of work.”
The dedication also included a blessing of the building by Florida Army National Guard chaplain Maj. Jeff Peppers and the presentation of two symbolic wooden Rudis swords and certificates of appreciation to Halfacre Construction Company and Bhide & Hall.
The Rudis sword presented to Halfacre Construction Company is inscribed with the message, “From the commander and soldiers of Special Operations Detachment – Central in recognition for superior craftsmanship of the SOD-C ‘Ready Building’ dedicated on 22 April 2016.”
The certificates read, “In recognition of your outstanding professional contributions to the SOD-C ‘Ready Building’ program. Your personal support to this initiative enabled us to have a world class training facility that enhances our ability to support the Theater Special Operations Command’s wartime mission.”
Lt. Col. Kevin Holiday, a professional engineer with the Florida Army National Guard, said it was exciting to walk into the finished building after more than six years of programming, design and construction.
“We’re very grateful to Halfacre for all they’ve done,” Holiday said.
Special Operations Detachment – Central was formed in October 2002. For years, they were based out of a trailer at MacDill before moving into the new building. Special Operations Detachment – Central has been deployed several times around the world, including Qatar, Jordan and Kenya. The unit has also responded to state emergencies such as fires, floods and hurricanes.
The eight-month project included the construction of the 8,000-square-foot building and site improvements for parking and storm drainage. The design of the project was required to meet LEED Silver certification, industry standards, and MacDill, state and federal building code requirements.
The building’s design features a custom stained glass window patterned after the Special Operations Detachment – Central unit crest, including the Latin phrase “Molon Labe,” or “Come and get it,” words thought to have been said by King Leonidas when Persian armies demanded the Greeks surrender.
