Elementary school students will help plant trees on Tuesday, May 3
TAMPA, Fla. (April 28, 2016) – In the spirit of Arbor Day, the University of South Florida Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGS) will host students from the Learning Gate Community School to help plant trees on the USF campus at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3. The event, to be held on Crescent Hill, located north of the Marshall Student Center, will serve as the start of a university project that will include 73 trees being planted on campus as a new initiative of the Student Green Energy Fund. The fund, approved by students through a referendum vote, was established in 2011 to support USF’s commitment to reduce and eventually eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from the campus.
Richard Berman, director for the PCGS, will host the event featuring poetry readings by the elementary students, the planting of two trees, and a demonstration by USF undergraduate students of the Tampa Tree Map web-based application. The event is free and open to the public.
The tree planting project was proposed and now is being led by John Pilz, a senior graduating from USF this semester, as part of the Student Green Energy Fund initiative. The proposal, made in collaboration with several other students, faculty and staff, requested funding to plant trees on campus to beautify and help reduce greenhouse emissions now and in the future. The project, which includes the tree planting and installation of irrigation systems, is expected to take six months to complete. More information about the fund, as well as current and completed projects, can be found at www.usf.edu/sgef.
