SARASOTA/BRADENTON, FL – From May 1-7, Goodwill Manasota will observe and celebrate the annual “Goodwill Week.” Goodwills across the United States will offer job fairs, host community programs and hold special events to honor supporters, among numerous other activities. Goodwill Week is used as a time to thank donors, shoppers and supporters who have made positive contributions that help carry out the organization’s mission of changing lives through the power of work.
As a prelude to Goodwill Week, Goodwill Manasota held its Ambassador Recognition Luncheon, recognizing those who make a commitment to share the mission of Goodwill with the greater community by volunteering at events, speaking on the organization’s behalf, creating new fundraisers, and introducing their friends, family and colleagues to Goodwill.
In April, during a meeting of the Sarasota County Commission, Goodwill Manasota board chair Rob Morris, board chair emeritus Steve Boone and Foundation vice president Veronica Brandon Miller were presented with a proclamation naming May 1-7 as “Goodwill Manasota Week” in honor of the organization’s significant contributions to the community.
On Monday, May 2, from 3-5pm, Goodwill offers its behind the scenes experience, titled “The River Tour,” which shows the flow of goods from the donation of goods to the sale in retails stores, and the impact that has for those with barriers to employment. Takes place at the Goodwill Corporate Campus (2705 51st Ave. E.) in Bradenton.
On Tuesday, May 3, Goodwill’s Veterans Services Program will hold its “Job Interview Skills” class from 3-5pm at the program offices in Sarasota (8490 Lockwood Ridge Road). The program – which is geared toward homeless veterans but all veterans seeking employment are welcome – also offers “Resume Building”; these courses are held on alternating Tuesdays. Upon the completion of both classes, veterans receive a certificate of completion, a printout of their resume, a thumb drive with the resume saved on it for future use, and a ticket to shop at Goodwill for two interview outfits. Instructor is Edwin Robinson, one of Goodwill’s veterans’ services program advisors.
On Wednesday, May 4, from 9am-1pm, Goodwill Manasota will host a job fair at its Corporate Campus (2705 51st Ave. E., Bradenton). Numerous employers in a variety of sectors are expected to attend, looking for candidates to fill empty positions. This event is being offered through Goodwill’s Job Connection, a free employment service for community members seeking jobs – or better jobs.
On Thursday, May 5, from 11:30am-1pm, Robin Moch, a partner at M.E. Wilson, will offer a Workers’ Compensation 101 seminar. Area businesses are invited to attend to learn about how premiums are calculated, how to lower premiums, how to interpret their experience mod worksheet, how to select an agency and whether or not they should shop for new coverage every year. Goodwill uses the proceeds from the sale of donated goods to fund training and employment programs to help individuals get back to work. In 2015, Goodwill Manasota served nearly 23,000 people, placed nearly 1,000 people in jobs and assisted 358 veterans as they reintegrated back into the civilian workforce. Goodwill Manasota’s economic impact back to the community is worth more than $81 million. Goodwill is one of the pioneers of the reduce-reuse-recycle movement and this past year diverted 41 million pounds out of the landfill.
