Tampa, Fla. – The Straz Center for the Performing Arts presents U.S. premiere of Habana Compás Dance on Friday, April 22, at 8 p.m., in Ferguson Hall.
Direct from Havana, Cuba, Habana Compás Dance encompasses the rich rhythm and flow of the island, performing traditional and modern dances born from their Spanish, Cuban and African-Cuban heritage. At turns merry, melancholy, ebullient and enervating, Habana Compás Dance enthralls and entertains, bringing the best of Cuban cross-cultural energy to the stage.
The company was founded in 2004 and is directed by dancer and choreographer Liliet Rivera Puentes. Eduardo Córdova is the music director.
Habana Compás Dance performances have been on many stages around Cuba and on various television programs. The company has performed at La Huella de España Festival, the Cuerda Viva Festival, the 6th National Festival of the Cuban Television, the opening show of the 2010 Cubadisco Awards, the Alabanza Gala in 2010, and at the closing galas of the Lucas Awards for the best Cuban music video in 2009 and 2010. In May 2011, the company was invited to take part in the Antalya Theatre Festival, Turkey (Antalya State Theatre). The performance was greatly acclaimed by both the public and the press. In June 2011, HCD travelled again to take part at two festivals in the city of Bordeaux, France.
