“A League of Your Own” and Pop-up Thrift Shoppe set for Give Day Tampa Bay
April 18, 2016, Gulfport, FL- Even as “movie in the park” festivities have spread across St Petersburg, Gulfport has gone without an outdoor movie event for a number of years. The city is now poised to rejoin the fun. CASA and Cinema Squatch have announced a free film screening and pop-up thrift store will be held May 3rd at Gulfport’s waterfront park on Shore Blvd South, sparking excitement in a community long known for hosting spectacular outdoor events.
On Tuesday, May 3, the 1990’s classic “A League of Their Own” will be shown on a giant screen on the ballfield outside the Gulfport Recreation Center, 5730 Shore Blvd. S. Doors open to CASA’s pop-up thrift shop and food vendors at 6pm, with the movie then starting at 8pm. (In the event of rain, the film will instead be shown at the Catherine Hickman Theater, 5501 27th Ave S, Gulfport.)
The event serves as a fundraiser for CASA, the domestic violence center serving southern Pinellas County, and is made possible with the generous support of Cinema Squatch and the City of Gulfport. Additional support is provided by event sponsors Give Day Tampa Bay, Gulfport Area Chamber of Commerce, Life Improvement Radio, LocalShops1 and Stella’s.
The outdoor movie is a “Give Day Tampa Bay” event supporting CASA’s ability to provide safety to families escaping violent homes. As an official “Give Day” nonprofit, CASA is in the running to win thousands of dollars in timed fundraising throughout the day on May 3. By attending the free movie screening, locals can help CASA win in the “most number of individual donors” category. Attendees (and supporters not able to make it) are asked to help CASA win by donating online on May 3 at www.casa-stpete.org/GiveDay.
CASA, Community Action Stops Abuse, has been providing lifesaving services to women, men, and children living with domestic violence since 1977. For more than 35 years, the community has relied on CASA to provide a safe refuge, crisis intervention, advocacy, prevention, professional training, outreach, and community education to end domestic violence and bring hope, independence and peace to families in southern Pinellas county.
CASA’s vision is a community without domestic violence so that home is a safe place. CASA’s mission is to raise our voices against violence through advocacy, empowerment and social change.
