Tampa, Fla. – The University Area Community Development Corporation (University Area CDC) has been awarded a 2016 Top Workplaces honor by The Tampa Bay Times, from results based solely on an employee feedback survey.
“Being recognized in this way is exciting because it actually comes from the employees,” said Sarah Combs, University Area CDC CEO and executive director. “Providing a culture where people feel connected, empowered and valued has always been important to the University Area CDC. This award reinforces why we spend extra effort rewarding our hard-working staff and ensuring that they feel valued.”
In the survey, administered by leading research firm WorkplaceDynamics, LLC, several aspects of workplace culture were measured, including alignment, execution and connection, among others.
One of the aspects of the University Area CDC culture that employees especially value is the feeling of consistent mutual respect between employees at all levels. Some specific examples include flexible work hours; employee appreciation and celebratory events and encouragement to use company time for free yoga and exercise classes at the on-site fitness center.
“I always say that we are a team, and that is absolutely true,” Combs added. “Everyone here has a specific and valuable role in improving the lives of those living in this greater community that we serve as part of our mission.”
Said Janice Walls, who oversees University Area CDC Human Resources, “It is an honor being recognized as a Top Workplace as it strengthens the relationship with our employees. Employees who are connected to the workplace are more engaged in their work and are valuable contributors to the overall success of University Area CDC. The recognition as an employer of choice presents University Area CDC with employment branding opportunities for attracting and retaining a talented workforce, and ongoing strategies with our culture, employee engagement and satisfaction.”

Doug Claffey, WorkplaceDynamics CEO, commented, “The Top Workplaces award is not a popularity contest. Organizations must meet our strict standards for organizational health. Time and time again, our research has proven that what’s most important to them (employees) is a strong belief in where the organization is headed, how it’s going to get there, and the feeling that everyone is in it together.”
University Area CDC offers support for thousands of Tampa residents through youth programs, adult education and resource assistance.
