Paul Inskeep began donating whole blood when he was in high school in upstate New York. In 1983, as a long distance truck driver he moved to Florida where he continued to donate sporadically. In 1992, he was asked to become a platelet donor and provide this special gift to help prevent internal bleeding in cancer patients, caused by the effects of chemotherapy. Since platelet donors can give as often as every week, up to 24 times a year, Paul began to increase his donation frequency. He enjoys knowing he is helping others to live as he relaxes on a donor couch and watches a movie, while some of his platelets are harvested from his blood and his red blood cells are returned to him.
Generally healthy people age 16 or older who weigh at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Photo ID is required. All donors receive a wellness checkup of blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron count and a cholesterol screening, plus a surprise gift. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. Blood that is donated today will likely be transfused into a patient within two to three days. The turn-around is that fast, the need is constant.
