For the fourth season, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Stantec have partnered to help continue the education of three deserving students from the Bay area through the Take Stock in Children program with the Hillsborough Education Foundation. On April 2nd, at the Lightning vs. New Jersey Devils game, Stantec awarded three students with a scholarship of $9,600 which includes a match from the Hillsborough Education Foundation. Emily Lamb, a 9th grader at Steinbrenner High School; Devin Johnson, a 9th grader at Tampa Bay Tech High School; and Christian Bermudez an, 8th grader at Burnett Middle School, were awarded their scholarships during the game on Saturday after an extensive essay and interview process.
Stantec teamed up with the Hillsborough Education Foundation to collaborate on the importance of STEM in the local schools. More than 400 local students submitted detailed essay’s beginning in November and then a two-month application process took place to find the top choices. Students from 6th to 9th grade who applied for this program were required to write an essay based on character building experiences and the influence those had on their life so far. A panel of judges consisting of Lightning, HEF and Stantec personnel reviewed all the essays and chose the top students.
“This is a program that we are very excited to be a part of as it shows strong commitment to our community and is of great importance to Stantec. There was something so heartfelt and personal about all three winner’s submissions that really stood out from the others – they are wonderful examples of our next generation of community leaders” said Kim Austin, Vice President, Regional Marketing and Communications at Stantec.
All three winners were surprised and honored at the Lightning home game in front of their family, friends and peers. Stantec and HEF presented each winner with a check for $9,600, which will go directly to their college education.
