March 24, 2016, St. Petersburg, FL- The final score? Over $15,000 of food, gift cards and other donations were contributed towards CASA’s Soup-er Bowl “Food Drive for a Safe Home” during the months of January and February, 2016. That amount includes enough non-perishable food to last the residents of CASA’s new 100-bed domestic violence center more than 8 weeks. The goal for next year? To provide enough non-perishables for 8 months.
In all, over 48 businesses and 500 residents contributed to the cause, assisting CASA’s mission to provide survivors of domestic abuse the opportunity to live a life free from violence. Four MVP’s were named in the post-game wrap-up: Raymond James, Eagle Asset Management, Catalina Marketing and Mustard Seed Bags of Courage. Other especially key players included Sheila King, Bob Coonrad, Ann Worthington, Darlene Gragg, Gulfport Merchants Association, The Carpet Store and St. Pete Moving & Storage. CASA expresses strong gratitude to every participating individual and business for their effort and important role in making Soup-er Bowl a success.
CASA’s Soup-er Bowl was created out of a need to provide for the 100+ children and adults receiving safe shelter at the organization’s new domestic violence center. The facility’s undisclosed location allows people to escape from abusive homes into a place where they can safely attain career, educational and personal goals. Most importantly, they enter an environment when their lives are no longer under the constant threat of physical and emotional violence.
Now serving three times as many people at a time as the previous shelter, the demands on CASA’s resources have seen tremendous growth, and only with the community’s continued support can the need be met. Only with action and contributions from the public can our region become safe from the epidemic of domestic violence.
