Legendary furniture store closing after 66 years of business
SARASOTA, FLA. — Kalins Furniture, a legendary furniture store in Sarasota, is closing after 66 years of serving the area. A going out of business sale at the store, located at 5252 S. Tamiami Trail, commences Fri., Mar. 4.
Kalins is the oldest, continuously run, family-owned retailer in Florida. Unable to find a suitable partner for a possible expansion, the family’s heartbreaking decision to close the store was made.
Founded in 1950 by Ed Kalin and his wife, Alyce, Kalins Furniture operated for most of its his-tory as Kanes of Sarasota. The couple opened their first Kanes location on South Orange Avenue shortly after they wed in Baltimore. Ed had just finished five years of service in the U.S. Navy, and the newlyweds decided Sarasota would be a good location for a design-oriented furniture store.
In 2013, the Kalin family chose the new name of Kalins Furniture to end the confusion between Kanes of Sarasota and similarly named stores in Florida.
Kalins is well known for its creative, award-winning interior decorating for private residences and model homes. The retailer’s slogan is “Your Dream, Your Style, Our Focus.”
“We are a full-service furniture store, voted winners of the Sarasota Herald Tribune’s Best Furni-ture Store award for 16 years in row,” said Jeff Kalin, co-owner of the store with his father Ed. “At Kalins Furniture, we are committed to helping you achieve your dream of home, while ex-pressing your unique style. We have something to suit anyone’s taste and budget, as well as a professional staff to assist you.”
One key element of Kalins’ success is its deep involvement in the Sarasota community. In 1988, Ed Kalin was honored with the local Anti-Defamation League’s Distinguished Community Ser-vice Award, and he later received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jewish National Fund. Alyce Kalin was just as active in the community, serving on the board of the Van Wezel Foundation and the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Federation. The couple also supported a wide range of other local organizations, including the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Ringling School of Art and Design and the Sarasota-Manatee Arch Family Holocaust Education Center.
Kalins Furniture offers a wide variety of furniture and bedding products from well-known brands such as Lexington, Tommy Bahama, Universal, Stanley, Hooker, Bernhardt, Theodore Alexander, ART and Artistica.
“Over the years, Kalins Furniture has become the Sarasota area’s destination for stylish, quality furnishings at an exceptional value,” said Jeff Kalin. “Kalins offers great products, from classic to contemporary and everything in between. This sale event offers customers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy brand furniture at going out of business prices.”
“We suggest shoppers come in early for the best selection,” Kalin added.
The company’s building, which has three acres of space under roof, is also available for sale or lease. The store’s website is located at www.kalinsfurniturestore.com.
