Tampa, FL ., Friday, February 26, 2016 –The American Red Cross Central Florida Region recently received a $100,000 donation from Amscot Financial to support the organization’s life-saving Home Fire Campaign.
This initiative is part of the American Red Cross national campaign to reduce deaths and injuries from home fires by as much as 25 percent by the year 2020.
“We are so grateful for the support of Amscot and the community volunteers powering our Home Fire Campaign,” American Red Cross Central Florida Region Chief Executive Officer, Linda Jorge Carbone. “Every day, Red Cross volunteers step onto a family’s doorstep in the moments after they have suffered a fire to help them through one of the worst times in their life. With the support of Amscot, this campaign will continue to put us on that doorstep before the unthinkable happens in the hopes that we can give them the tools to know how to safely survive and prevent the larger tragedy you can never fully recover from: the loss of a loved one. We know we’re doing something important- every escape plan we write and every alarm we install has the real potential to save lives”.
“Safety has always been high on our priority list,” says Ian MacKechnie, Amscot’s founder and CEO. “We’re glad to support a campaign that arms people with the tools and education they need to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.”
American Red Cross volunteers and partners including local fire departments go door to door in high risk neighborhoods, installing free smoke and teaching people about what they can do now to be prepared should a fire break out in their home.
As of December 31, 2015, nearly 4,000 smoke alarms have been installed in the Central Florida region and over 4,200 people have been served. Nationwide, almost 240,000 smoke alarms have been installed through this initiative. As of February 17, 2016 the campaign has reportedly saved 69 lives in the United States thanks to the smoke alarm installations.
Seven times a day someone in this country dies in a fire. The Red Cross campaign focuses on joining fire departments and community groups nationwide to install smoke alarms in communities with high numbers of fires and encouraging everyone to practice their fire escape plans.
The Red Cross also is asking every household in America to take the two simple steps that can save lives: checking their existing smoke alarms and practicing fire drills at home.
The American Red Cross responds to an average of nearly 66,000 disasters every year in the United States and the vast majority of those are home fires. The Central Florida Region responds to an average of 3 disasters a day.
