You’d think the name was made out of leftover alphabet magnets by Keep St Pete Lit, who celebrate the written word in unique events all around the city. But “Ekphrastic” is for real, from a Greek word that means a ‘written commentary on a visual work of art.’
Last year’s event sold out in advance at Soft Water Studios in St. Pete’s Warehouse Arts District, as actors performed poetry, prose and plays inspired by the artwork on display.
Keep St Pete Lit’s Maureen McDole explains the appeal of this eclectic evening. “A writer’s work is brought to life by an actor, while you’re viewing the inspiration behind the words by looking at the artist’s piece. You’re part of the creative process.”
The Fantastic Ekphrastic artists are painters, sculptors and photographers. The writing comes from poets, playwrights, crafters of fiction and journalists.
“I had a strong desire to merge the visual and literary arts in a collaborative environment,” adds McDole. “By adding the performance aspect, we create a dynamic interdisciplinary experience.”
It’s an experience that riveted audiences last year, when sculpted heads salvaged from an Art Deco building came to life alongside large-scale paintings and a sepia-toned portrait of a thumb by noted jazz photographer, Herb Snitzer. The thumb took home the Audience Award.
