Tampa, FL (Feb 5, 2016) – The Gasparilla Music Festival (GMF) announced that it will be adding an entire lineup of Latin musicians on its newest stage at MacDill Park in downtown Tampa on Sunday March 13. The artists to perform include Cuban folk hero Carlos Varela and his band, salsa and timba superstars Pirulo y la Tribu, Tampa Bay’s own Sol Caribe and rising Cumbia artist Larry Duran.
“These cultures are such a huge part of our community, so we are excited to see them take a larger role in the festival,” said Gasparilla Music Festival executive director David Cox.
Havana based Carlos Varela was recently featured in an HBO documentary and is widely regarded as Cuba’s poet laureate — some have even called him the Cuban Bob Dylan. He will performing with his band which is recognized as one of the most talented groups in Cuba. Billboard has lauded Puerto Rican based Pirulo y la Tribu as reinventors of the Carribean’s most revered styles — including Nuyorican salsa, Afro-Cuban son, and bomba from Puerto Rico. Pirulo is a current Billboard finalist for “Best Tropical Album”. Sol Caribe has become one of Tampa’s Latin American bands with their tropical beats swaying easily between salsa, cha cha, cumbia and merengue. Tampa based Larry Duran is enjoying a steady rise in popularity thanks to the authenticity of his fresh take on Cumbia, the dance-oriented music of Colombia.
GMF’s newest stage was added this year to further expand the festival’s footprint in downtown Tampa and incorporate Tampa’s recently completed Riverwalk. MacDill Park is located at 100 N Ashley Drive just south of Curtis Hixon Park and is accessible via the Riverwalk. Food during the new festival stage will include local favorite Rafi’s Rollin Ricans food truck, and there will be a VIP bar and viewing area located to the west of the stage
Admittance to the MacDill Stage is included with all General Admission and VIP tickets valid for the weekend or Sunday March 13. Additionally, GMF is offering a limited quantity of $20 “Latin Stage” only tickets which will provide General Admission access to just the MacDill Park Stage on Sunday March 13. Sunday General Admission tickets with access to the entire festival are $30 and Sunday VIP Tickets are $75. Tickets are available at www.gmftickets.com
