SARASOTA COUNTY – As part of Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources’ “One Book One Community” 2016 celebration of the 100th anniversary of John D. MacDonald’s birth, Florida author Tim Dorsey will receive the John D. MacDonald Award for Excellence in Florida Fiction at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Selby Public Library.
The announcement was made recently by Calvin Branche, president of Green Flash Salvage, a Florida nonprofit whose aim is to further Florida fiction, especially in the mystery/crime/detective genre.
Dorsey is only the seventh winner of the award, established in 1992 by the JDM Bibliophile. Green Flash Salvage has awarded the prize since 2002. He was a reporter and editor for the Tampa Tribune from 1987 to 1999 and is a New York Times best-selling author of 11 titles. All of his books take place in Florida, and his protagonist is very much like MacDonald’s Travis McGee. Dorsey lives in Tampa.
Some past winners of the award include Elmore Leonard, James W. Hall, Randy Wayne White, and Stuart Kaminsky.
Selby Public Library is at 1331 1st St, Sarasota.
