SARASOTA, FL – Since 1996, with the support of the Sarasota County community, CYD has engaged middle and high school students in life-changing programs that prepare them for success in school, work and life. The organization will kick off its 20th anniversary year with a series of proclamations throughout the county: the Sarasota County School Board (Feb. 2), the city commissions of Venice (Feb. 9), North Port (Feb. 11) and Sarasota (Feb. 16), and Sarasota County commission (Feb. 17) will present CYD leaders with certificates recognizing its contributions to young lives and the community at large.
Since its beginnings, CYD has worked in partnership with local government, nonprofit and community organizations interested in youth to address the needs of teens in Sarasota County. CYD believes that young people have a powerful voice and can make a lasting impact on the community right now. Each year, thousands of local middle and high school students engage in CYD activities that cultivate leadership skills and support positive choices.
CYD’s signature programs are the STAR (Students Take Active Roles) Leadership Training, which has been recognized as one of the top leadership programs for youth in the country; SRQVolunteen, which is designed to connect students to volunteer service; and the Jump Start program, through which other organizations can receive training for teens and young adults from CYD professionals.
“CYD is proud to help young people find their voices and develop the confidence and skills that will serve them in the present and well into the future,” said CEO Karen Bogues, who has been with the organization since the beginning. “Every day, teens face decisions that determine whether they succeed in life or become a burden on society. That is where CYD comes in, providing the tools to help youth make positive choices. With the support of an appreciative community, we look forward to encouraging and inspiring youth leaders for at least another 20 years.”
