“What’s Going On?” – An Anthology of the music of Marvin Gaye is not a tribute, it’s an experience! Backed by an 18-piece orchestra, four extraordinary vocalists re-create the vocals, phrasing, nuances and musical genius of Marvin Gaye, including his many memorable duets. The two-hour show lands in Venice from New York, following a series of critically acclaimed, sold-out performances. See a preview performance at: http://youtu.be/PiJrQQj4vL0
Marvin Gaye’s music has stood the test of time. His rendition of “Heard It through the Grapevine” was number 80 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time; and ranked 65th on Billboard magazine’s commemorative 50th Anniversary Billboard Hot 100. Never one to shy away from putting his heart in his lyrics, Gaye often found himself at odds with his record company over lyrics considered radical and controversial for the times. He is renowned for continually reinventing himself through his music, from his sharkskin-suited solo days, to classic duets with fellow Motown artists, including Tammi Terrell, to the socially conscious, politically charged “What’s Going On?”, and later the raw sensuality of songs like “Let’s Get It On” and “Sexual Healing.” Enormously talented, and equally complicated, Gaye was plagued by drugs, depression and financial problems. He died of a gunshot wound inflicted by his father on April 1, 1984, one day short of his 45th birthday. Three years later he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
“Marvin Gaye was, undeniably, one of the architects of the Motown sound,” said event producer Carl Labate of RnB Classics Live. “And who doesn’t love the finger snappin’, hand clappin, makes you want to dance Motown sound? After attending a performance at the beautiful Venice Performing Arts Center, we determined that this show was perfect for the spacious, yet intimate facility. We are thrilled to be bringing this amazing show, and the enduring musical legacy of Marvin Gaye to southwest Florida.”
