SARASOTA, Fla. (Dec. 18, 2015) – USF Sarasota-Manatee this week is welcoming dozens of young musicians from across the world as the Perlman Music Program/Suncoast Winter Residency returns to campus.
The 35 musicians ages 12 to 20-plus arrived in the area this week with rehearsals set to begin Friday. The first student “works-in-progress” recital is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday.
The program runs through Jan. 2, during which students and faculty led by renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman and his wife, Toby Perlman, take over classrooms for private tutoring and group instruction, transforming the campus into a music conservatory.
“This is our seventh year on campus and it’s really an exciting time,” said Elizabeth Powers, executive director of the PMP/Suncoast. “The students literally take over the classrooms and the campus is filled with music. We really feel USFSM is a true partner with us.”
The program offers the young musicians, who play violin, viola, cello and bass, life-changing, personalized attention from world-acclaimed faculty led by Perlman. The public is invited to 20 events, from chorus rehearsals and student recitals to a Celebration Concert scheduled 5 p.m., Jan. 2, at the Sarasota Opera House.
“We are so fortunate to host the Perlman Music Program’s Winter Residency Program,” said Dr. Sandra Stone, regional chancellor for USF Sarasota-Manatee. “The Perlmans and their students are among the most talented musicians in the world, and this residency allows our campus to contribute to the first-class arts programming that happens in this community.”
Most of the events are free and will occur inside a heated tent behind the campus building, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Question and answer sessions with the Perlmans and PMP students and faculty follow many of the events.

Free bus rides for USFSM students coming in January
Getting to and from USF Sarasota-Manatee is about to get easier under a program that offers free bus rides to USFSM students and employees starting Jan. 1.
Employees and students with valid university ID will be able ride free on Manatee County Area Transit and Sarasota County Area Transit buses that serve the campus.
The U-pass program, approved by Manatee officials in November and Sarasota County officials Dec. 8, resulted from meetings this past fall between USFSM and the counties.
USFSM agreed to pay Sarasota and Manatee’s bus agencies $5,000 each in an effort to help students and employees travel to and from campus. The program runs for one year and will be evaluated next year. Most of USFSM’s students reside in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
USF’s Tampa and St. Petersburg campuses have similar arrangements with bus agencies there.
