Hurricane Katrina devastated the lives of thousands of people. For Ohio based contractor John Wolterman, it inspired him to move his family to Florida and start Net Zero Construction to create the new standard of “Energy, Smart, Safe Homes.” These completely custom built homes are energy efficient, offer smart home technology and can withstand the hurricane force winds, in excess of 250 mph.
Witnessing the damage firsthand during his New Orleans vacation, Wolterman dedicated himself to researching a safer, more durable home construction standard. He became a proponent of using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) which resulted in cast-in-place concrete walls between two layers of insulation. These systems are extremely strong and energy efficient making Net Zero Construction a leader in sustainable building.
Wolterman grew up in the concrete construction industry working with his father during the summers. After high school graduation, Wolterman and his father started Wolterman Bros. Construction. It eventually became a family affair with more than 60 employees and grossed over $20 million in business per year. When the construction industry crashed, he felt it was time to follow his dream and move to Florida.
“Moving was a tough decision for me,” he said. “I come from a very large, tight-knit family. My father is one of 16 and we all lived within a 10 mile radius of each other.”
Net Zero Construction is a full service home builder. They are committed to designing and building homes where people love to live, and they work side-by-side with the homeowners from start to finish. Their goal is not only to build a safe and beautiful home, but to make the building process seamless. Every Net Zero home features luxurious details and floor plans are adjusted to the owners specifications.
“Building energy efficient, smart, safe homes doesn’t mean you are paying more,” he said. “In fact, with the use of Insulated Concrete Forms, there are tremendous savings to the homeowner on their monthly energy bill and heavily discounted insurance. Plus, we offer a lifetime transferrable roof warranty. No other builder offers this as a standard.”
Each Net Zero home also comes with its own certification. Every detail from framing to paint colors are carefully recorded on a dedicated homeowner website. Making it easy for the home owner and future home owner to have all the information they need about their Net Zero home.
