YBOR CITY, Fla., Dec. 4, 2015 – The 14th annual “Richard’s Run for Life” 5K donated $108,000, to the Adolescent Young Adult (AYA) Program for sarcoma research and the Advanced Prostate Cancer Collaboration (APCC) at Moffitt Cancer Center.
“We want to thank the 2,000 runners, walkers, volunteers, supporters and sponsors who joined us on Nov. 6 in our quest to find better treatments to combat cancer and one day have a cure,” said Richard Gonzmart, 4th generation family member and president of the Columbia Restaurant Group. “I feel that our run and other events like it give patients battling cancer and their families hope … hope that we will find that cure soon. I believe Moffitt and other cancer centers are making great progress each day.”
The Gonzmart Family Foundation donated more than 100% of the revenue and covers 100% of the expenses.
Richard Gonzmart created this race to celebrate those fighting and surviving cancer, people such as 6-year-old Hayden. He was facing amputation of his leg at the hip from sarcoma cancer until his family learned of Dr. Doug Letson at Moffitt and his technique of saving a limb by replacing the femur with a titanium rod. Hayden’s procedure was a success and he now has full use of his leg.
“Richard’s Run for Life” has raised more than $848,000 since 2002.
Next year’s race is Friday, Nov. 4.
