SARASOTA, Fla. (Nov. 6, 2015) – USF Sarasota-Manatee will serve as host this weekend for a meeting of the Mid-Florida chapter for the Fulbright Association, an organization that represents international scholars and students as well as U.S. citizens who study abroad.
“The prestigious Fulbright program offers students and faculty scholars an opportunity to study and conduct research in other countries, which expands their personal and professional horizons and lends a broader perspective to their work,” Dr. Sandra Stone, regional chancellor for USF Sarasota-Manatee, said. “These experiences are invaluable to the participants and contribute to their success in an increasingly globally connected world.”
The event – a collaboration of the Mid-Florida chapter of Fulbright Association, USFSM and the USF World study-abroad program – is intended to welcome students, scholars and alumni to the Sarasota-Manatee area.
The 16 students and scholars, along with eight Fulbright alumni, are set to gather for a reception at 5 p.m. today at USFSM’s Culinary Innovation Lab in Lakewood Ranch. On Saturday, the group will tour the area and Mote Marine Laboratory.
The visit comes as Fulbright student, Nefike Günden, and scholar, Dr. Rong-Da Liang, are visiting USFSM.
Günden, who is pursuing a master’s degree at USFSM’s College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership, is from Turkey. Dr. Liang is from the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism in Taiwan. He is here to study marketing and tourism trends at theme parks.
Amela Malkic, director of USFSM’s Global Engagement program, and Dr. Darlene DeMarie, a USF Fulbright faculty advisor, are co-chairs of the event and members of the Fulbright Association.
“This event will bring together 16 students and scholars from 13 different countries, as well as eight alumni, and we are truly honored to have them visit this weekend,” Malkic said.
Said Dr. DeMarie: “While we visit sites around the area, we will engage in dialogue and discussion to help us become more culturally aware.”
