Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough Counties, Florida – (October 22, 2015) Medical Center of Trinity has reached a milestone event by being designated as an American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery Gynecological Surgery Center of Excellence. This accomplishment was achieved after passing a series of rigorous criteria established by the accrediting body AIMIS.
The Gynecological Center of Excellence designation is important to the community, because it gives patients added assurance that Medical Center of Trinity has not only passed and exceeded existing norms for minimally invasive surgery quality and delivery, but also has physicians on staff who have achieved the AIMIS designation as an accredited AIMIS physician as well.
Approximately 600,000 hysterectomies are performed each year in the United States, making it the second most common procedure performed on women in the U.S. And yet, according to the Centers of Disease Control & Prevention, an estimated two-thirds of these operations entail open surgeries rather than minimally invasive laparoscopic/robotic methods. The designation from AIMIS is focused on advancing solutions to facilitate the conversion of a greater percentage of procedures from more-traumatic open surgeries to laparoscopic /robotic approaches that offer patients shorter hospitalizations and faster returns to normal activities.
According to Steven McCarus, MD, Chief Executive Officer of AIMIS, “We continue to assess and institute the use of latest technology, and teaching methods that advance continued use and implementation of minimally invasive surgery. Medical Center of Trinity has now joined only a handful of leading hospitals around the nation to enjoy the AIMIS accreditation.” Collecting and reporting outcomes data is a means to the end of transparency and accountability.
Leigh Massengill, CEO of Medical Center of Trinity, stated, “This designation sets Medical Center of Trinity apart from every other hospital and joins some of the most prominent hospitals in the nation for improving women’s health. This helps to contribute to the role and responsibility we have in the greater Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough area for continued surgical improvement for all patients.
“Medical Center of Trinity has a long history of leadership in service to women’s issues. It is gratifying to know we are now nationally recognized for this commitment,” said Parveen Vahora, MD, Gynecology, Director of the AIMIS Gynecological Center of Excellence for Medical Center of Trinity.
