Last night I met a woman that told me something that happens so often, but very few people believe it’s true. I’ve heard the story over and over, characters, circumstances and places may change, but basically I hear the same story. Have you?
This is what Samantha (not her real name) told me. ‘Samantha worked at a place where there was an IT department just like hundred’s of companies around Tampa Bay. The company had secured information like many other companies in the Tampa Bay area. Samantha had been there for years and got to know people in other departments including the IT department. She found out the one of her friends in the IT department built computers on his off time, so when Samantha had trouble with her computer she decided to have her friend from the IT department build her computer. Her friend offered to give her a discount if she traded in her old computer. The friend promised to clean the hard drive so not to worry about security.
After Samantha had worked on the home built computer for a few days, an email popped up for someone else. To her surprise, she could open the email and discovered she had all the information a cyber thief could ever want, including an email file with passwords to bank accounts, credit card accounts, Facebook account, Linkedin, and other personal information.
Fortunately, Samantha is not the type of person that would use the information for ill gain. What about her information? If this computer had all this information on it, how comfortable is she with her IT friends
