VENICE, Fla. — Six local high school boys basketball teams have been selected to participate in the second annual Jammin’ for Jutras pre-season classic, a fundraising event to benefit the Kyle Jutras Scholarship Foundation.
On November 10 and 12, Cardinal Mooney High School, Lemon Bay High School, North Port High School, Riverview High School, Sarasota High School and Venice High School will compete during the two-day pre-season classic. All event proceeds will be donated to the Kyle Jutras Scholarship Foundation, a nonprofit founded in 2015 to annually award scholarships and assist graduating high school seniors in Sarasota, Manatee or Charlotte counties.
The pre-season classic is organized by Rob Jutras, father of Kyle Jutras, a Venice High School graduate and Sarasota High School math teacher who succumbed to a rare form of cancer, and Jeff Charlotte, president and CEO of J.E. Charlotte Construction Corp. Kyle Jutras was a top student and athlete in high school. As a teacher and junior varsity basketball coach at Sarasota High School, he sought to instill the same values in his students and his players.
“During my son’s courageous battle with cancer, he inspired an entire community to keep moving forward no matter how bad the situation was,” says Jutras. “Through it all, he was grateful for the support he received and enlisted me to establish the Kyle Jutras Scholarship Foundation to help area students achieve their educational goals. Together with the help of a lot of good people, I am so happy to be able to keep his legacy alive, hosting events like these to help young people locally.”
Several individuals and organizations have donated their time or contributed to the event, including the Gulf Coast Basketball Officials Association donating all refereeing services, Allen Sports Center donating Adidas warm-up shirts and J.E. Charlotte Construction Corp purchased the admission wristbands.
“This cause is very close to my heart because I lost my sister to cancer,” says Charlotte. “Kyle was one of those kids who played sports the right way. He was an amazing athlete and a great example for high school students today. We hope to continue to build awareness for this wonderful organization and all that it does locally.”
A KJ #14 wristband is $10 and includes admission to all games on both nights. To purchase a wristband, please visit J.E. Charlotte Construction Corp. in Venice or at participating high schools. To view the pre-season basketball classic schedule, please visit www.kjscholarshipfoundation.org.
