TAMPA, Fla. – (October 7, 2015) – Identifying a critical need in the community for loving, safe foster homes for teens in the system of care, a group of local individuals have come together to form BeHomebase, an organization dedicated to creating awareness and addressing this need in the Tampa Bay area.
The group recently hosted a foster care orientation in partnership with A Door of Hope, a foster licensing agency dedicated to providing hope for children in crisis, which educated attendees on the system of care and what it takes to become a foster parent.
“People often think of orphans as being in a third-world country, but there is a huge a need for families for children in our own backyard,” said Amy Davis, Founder of BeHomebase. “This is especially true for teenagers, who have less than a five percent chance of being placed in a foster home.”
As a result, teens are often sent to group homes where they are more vulnerable to sex trafficking, mental health issues, drug use and running away.
“These are normal teenagers who have been removed from their home at no fault of their own,” said Davis. “What they need is a place that they can call home base – a loving, stable household where they can create deep emotional connections before they go back to their families or age out of the system of care.”
These connections are particularly important because they allow teenagers to heal from their difficult pasts and learn to develop healthy emotional attachments.
BeHomebase is hoping to increase the placement of teens in homes throughout the Tampa Bay area, in part by creating awareness for the need in the community. In addition, the group connects interested families with the appropriate foster licensing agencies.
“While we may not be able to bring a teen into our homes ourselves, we cannot sit idly by and do nothing,” said Davis. “We have been made aware of the problem, and we are crazy enough to believe that we can make an impact – one home at a time.”
Based in Tampa, Fla. BeHomebase is a non-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing awareness to the critical need for loving, safe homes for teens in the system of care. The mission of the organization is two-fold: to raise awareness in the community and recruit foster parents that are willing to welcome a teen into their home.
