Southwest FL – Local attorney and veterans’ advocate Bill Robertson was our August keynote speaker. Bill devotes a lot of energy to helping local veterans. In fact, a segment of Bill’s weekly WSRQ radio show, “Let’s Talk Law,” at the end of each month is dedicated to veterans. The segment, “Helping Our Heroes,” provides a platform for veterans seeking employment to connect with local CEOs.
A Sarasota native, Bill spoke of growing up here and getting to school by boat (occasionally getting pulled out to sea by the “fishing” currents). There is a strong tradition of service in the Robertson family, and Bill spoke at length about his grandfather’s service in the Civil War. Following in the proud family tradition of helping others through the practice of law, he is the fifth generation of lawyers to serve this community, practicing in the same location where his grandfather and great grandfather started their legal practice in 1925. A video was shown describing the effectiveness of Bill’s monthly radio segment featured veterans in need of employment. (http://youtu.be/OxWlP50-bdE).
SERV (Special Emergency Resources for Veterans) is a local program that expands an initiative started by Bill several years ago. As Air Force vet CJ Bannister, Manasota Goodwill Director of Veterans Services, and Marine vet Steve Hall of Alltrust Insurance explained, SERV is a one stop, comprehensive source for veterans in need; everything from housing, food, and education to assistance with the VA and other service providers. From Oct. 12th until Nov. 11th 2015, SERV has partnered with many local businesses for the “Round Up.” Participating businesses will ask if you would like to ‘round up’ the cost of your purchase, which goes to SERV. 100% of the proceeds will go to veterans. No admin or overhead charges. To learn more go to https://vimeo.com/134766239.
Finally, Bill spoke about Operation Second Chance (OSC), an organization in this area that provides support to wounded warriors and their families and showed a moving video featuring wounded vets who have participated in OSC. (https://
Bill Robertson, CJ Bannister and Steve Hall are further examples of the heroes all around us. They see a need and act. We are fortunate to have such energetic and caring veteran advocates in our community.
