Program provides a sustainable and cost effective alternative to car ownership on campus
TAMPA — Today The University of Tampa launched a new partnership with Zipcar, the world’s leading car sharing network, to continue its car sharing program on campus. The convenient, economical transportation option is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for students, faculty and staff ages 18 and older.
UT and Zipcar will offer three vehicles, a Ford Focus, a Toyota Corolla and a Nissan Versa Hatchback. The Zipcars will have designated parking spots located on Spaulding Drive for convenient pick-up and return.
“Zipcar offers students easy, efficient and environmental transportation alternatives to car ownership,” said Stephanie Russell Krebs, UT’s dean of students. “Car sharing has been proven to be an appealing option for UT community members and is especially so now that UT freshmen are not allowed to bring cars to campus.”
UT has offered car sharing on campus with Hertz 24/7 since 2010. However, starting today, Zipcar will be the sole car sharing provider. UT students, faculty and staff can join Zipcar at www.zipcar.com/ut. Members can also use Zipcars in other cities when traveling for business or pleasure.
UT community members can join for $15, with rates for Zipcar vehicles on campus starting as low as $7.50 per hour and $69 per day. Gas, insurance and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in Zipcar rates, and cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days.
Zipcar will waive its first year’s annual membership fee for Hertz 24/7 members. Simply enroll at www.zipcar.com/UT and select “former Hertz 24/7 members.” Please remember to enter your Hertz membership ID number in the appropriate field.
Participating members with smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices, may download the Zipcar mobile application to make reservations, lock and unlock the vehicles and honk the horn to help locate the vehicle. Reservations can also be made over the phone or on Zipcar’s website.
“The Zipcar program on campus gives students, faculty and staff the freedom of using a car without the hassles of owning one,” said Katelyn Bushey, Zipcar director of university sales. “We’re happy to partner with University of Tampa to give their community a transportation option to fit their needs and their wallet.”
Zipcar has established relationships with more than 400 universities across North America.
Zipcar, the world’s leading car sharing network, has operations in urban areas and college campuses throughout Austria, Canada, France, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. Zipcar offers more than 50 makes and models of self-service vehicles by the hour or day to residents and businesses looking for smart, simple and convenient solutions to their urban and campus transportation needs.
