A seasoned journalist, Shedden previously served as Editor of Health News Florida. That role included editing daily products such as the widely read Health News Florida news review, plus producing breaking health news radio packages, and guiding investigations into topics such as the growing and diverse tide of HIV infections in Florida.
“We are thrilled that such a skilled and experienced journalist as Mary could take this leadership role for our radio station,” said WUSF Public Media General Manager JoAnn Urofsky.
“Many listeners may know Mary from her voice on the radio, but fewer may know she played such a pivotal leadership role behind the scenes, helping steer Health News Florida to where it is today. We’re privileged to have someone move up the ranks here with such intense devotion, skill and sure-footed news judgment.”
The role of News Director includes steering WUSF newsroom programs such as “Florida Matters,” and orchestrating local coverage to merge with national broadcasts such as National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered.”
“It has been my honor to work with the incredible news team here at WUSF,” Shedden said. “Every day this station produces some of the finest broadcast journalism in the country. I look forward to working with our team as we move forward to shed light on the major issues this state faces.”
Shedden has a career spanning 20-plus years in journalism. Prior to joining WUSF Public Media in 2013, Shedden served as a senior reporter covering health and business for The Tampa Tribune/TBO.com covering topics such as retired professional athletes in chronic pain, toxins in children’s toys and the risk seniors face from prescription drug overdoses.
Shedden has also worked for Florida Today and the Gainesville Sun, and been honored by professional organizations including the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Florida Society of News Editors. She is also on the board of directors for the national Association of Health Care Journalists.
A graduate of the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, Shedden has lived in the Tampa Bay area since 1999.
