St. Petersburg, Florida August 29, 2015 1:30pm-2:00am Darryl Quesenberry, also known as “Funky D”, is a longtime member of the St. Petersburg, Florida music scene and is considered a valued mentor to many in the area. His influence can be seen and heard across multiple genres of music and multiple generations of musicians. D has recently been diagnosed with colon cancer. The Amsterdam will be hosting a fundraiser on August 29th to help D and his family with the burden of fighting this horrible disease.
D moved to St. Petersburg in 1990 and quickly became ensconced as a well known drummer in the area. He attended St. Petersburg College, majoring in percussion, while performing across greater Tampa Bay. He has expanded his talents over the years becoming a multi-instrumentalist and is well known not only for the unique funky sound he has brought to many bands but also for his passion for mentoring other musicians.
Musicians across many genres and many generations credit their ability to “break into” the St. Pete/Tampa music scene directly to D Quesenberry. Joe Roma, band leader for Row Jomah has this to say about D, “He is the rare person who helps others with no expectation of a return. He recognized our talent and helped foster it. [He] almost singlehandedly introduced us to the music community and asked for nothing in return.” Este Loves, a talented and up and coming singer/songwriter in the area draws inspiration and support from D regularly stating, “De has been a huge inspiration to me …and keeps encouraging me every step of the way!”
The fundraiser seeks to raise $10,000 to help D and his family with the massive financial burden of fighting Colon Cancer. There will be music from 1:30 pm until the bar closes performed by the area’s top musicians in support of this important event. Along with music all day, there will be a raffle and an auction with some truly exceptional prizes including life-long passes for two to the Orange Blossom Jamboree Music Festival held every year in Brooksville, Florida. Tickets for this event are $8.00 in advance or $10.00 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at www.daddykool.com or at The Amsterdam on the day of the event.
