SARASOTA, Fla. (Aug. 10, 2015) – USF Sarasota-Manatee senior Priscilla Sosa is taking community engagement to a new level.
The Sarasota resident and 22-year-old biology student is organizing a one-day biology workshop for up to two dozen teens from the Sarasota YMCA’s Young Achievers program where she volunteers.
The group will catch a bus Thursday morning to the USFSM Teaching Labs at Mote Marine Laboratory, explore the grounds of Mote on City Island, collect samples from Sarasota Bay and analyze the samples at the lab.
“I’m super excited about it. I’ve never done an event like this before,” said Sosa, who is president of USFSM’s Biology Club. “Hopefully we can do this every year or every semester.”
Sosa came up with the idea a few weeks ago and approached Dr. Edie Banner, who operates a teaching lab at Mote.
Dr. Banner agreed to help as a way to spur interest in science, and biology in particular, in the teens who run from 8th to 12th grade.
“We wanted to do this so they know what careers are possible and so they can see what biologists do,” Dr. Banner said.
“The students will start with an activity outside,” she said. “They’ll collect some samples and then we’ll look them under the microscope. We’ll also have some chemical labs and do some chemical reactions.”
The workshop will run about three hours.
Sosa, who wants to pursue a dentistry degree after graduation, said she hopes the event opens the students’ eyes to possible careers, whether in the medical profession or as researchers in biology.
“We have so many resources here in this area,” she said.
