Laurie Wisotsky joins the elite group of World and American record holders at this one-of-a-kind Relay
Tampa Bay, FL July 29, 2015 – Local athlete Laurie Wisotsky recently participated in the prestigious Drake Relays Masters Invitational Women’s 800 meter event as one of only ten women chosen from a national pool of applicants. Wisotsky was the only woman chosen from Florida and the entire southeastern United States to compete in the 2015 competition. The Drake Relays is regarded as one of the top track and field events in the United States.
The application and selection process of the Drake Relays Masters Invitational Women’s 800 meter event is, in a word, tough! In fact, all aspects of the Drake Relays is difficult. For instance, a selection committee searches and chooses the most competitive field of athletes to participate in the race. The process includes a strict time standard regardless of the Masters age.
Wisotsky commented, “It was exciting to be in the midst of such high level athletes competing in an elite race. It was hard not to feel a bit star struck by the other world-class athletes.” Some of the incredible athletes competing at the Drake Relays included two Olympic champions, the world record holder in both the decathlon and indoor heptathlon events, and the current Masters World Record holder for the Indoor 800 meter event.
Being asked to race at Drake is a huge privilege and honor. It’s an exciting atmosphere and despite cold wet weather, the Relays enjoyed a huge spectator turnout. Wisotsky said “It was windy, rainy and really cold. But, I feel that it was one of my best races and am honored to have competed in it.”
No rest for this athlete – this month Wisotsky competed at the USATF Masters National Outdoor Championship that features athletes ranging in age from 30 to 95+. She competed in the 800 meter and 1500 meter track race that took place July 23 through July 26, 2015 at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, FL. Each age group competed in speed, strength and endurance.
