Description: A new body of work by local Gulfport artist and painter Judy Palaferro will be on exhibition through mid-September at Michele Tuegel Contemporary gallery in downtown St. Petersburg. After many years living in Brooklyn, Judy moved to Florida’s Gulf Coast to embrace a focused life style, investigating her painting methods further in tandem with Florida’s nature and light. Palaferro explains, “I love the physicality of the work, the risks I take and the state of suspense with my process. I am both spontaneous and contemplative and wish to incorporate this sense of process on very large canvasses.” Hence the physical title of the exhibition, Spilling. Dripping, pouring and spilling both translucent and opaque paint on the surface – which she terms ‘the active feast of liquid coloring’ – embraces the energy and psyche of this body of explorative work.
Judy Palaferro received a BFA from Tyler School of Art in graphic design and started painting in the late 80’s where much of her time was spent in studios across Manhattan: Robert’s warehouse in Midtown West, the Lower East Side and Hell’s Kitchen. Professionally, she worked as a graphic designer and a textile artist and published an award winning children’s book. Only after years of drawing and painting the figure stylistically did Palaferro begin exploring Abstract Expressionism.
Michele Tuegel Contemporary represents the work of painter Judy Palaferro. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 11am-6pm. Events are free and open to the public.
