The University of South Florida Alumni Association has named its summer 2015 Outstanding Graduate for the USF System. Outstanding Graduates are graduating seniors who embody leadership, school spirit, academic excellence, community involvement and a love for USF.
Trang Luong, Civil Engineering, will be recognized at USF Tampa’s Aug. 8 Commencement.
Luong came to USF from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where she was a top-ranked student with little hope of studying abroad due to illness, cost, and her lack of English proficiency. After learning about USF through INTO, which recruits and supports the university’s international students, Luong’s parents obtained loans and sold their home to finance her education. Luong, who had recently undergone treatment for thyroid cancer, immersed herself in all aspects of USF life, from academics to volunteer work. She received the prestigious Golden Bull Award for exceptional leadership and service to USF and was the No. 1 prize-winner in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) 2014 New Faces competition. She served as student government senator for the College of Engineering; president of Engineers for a Sustainable World’s student chapter; and vice president of ASCE’s student chapter. She also tutored children and coordinated volunteer Bulls Service Break trips.
Luong graduates with a 3.73 grade-point average and plans to pursue USF’s accelerated one-year master’s degree in transportation engineering. She wants to focus on research that advances driverless cars.
