Description: A recently-completed body of work by St. Petersburg visual artist and calligrapher Ruth Pettis will be on exhibition throughout July, 2015 at Michele Tuegel Contemporary gallery in downtown St. Petersburg. Ruth Pettis has been a full-time, freelance calligrapher since 1978, the same year she received a B.A. in Visual Arts from Eckerd College. Ruth explains “I met up with writing-as-art or calligraphy at the age of 18, in a class at Eckerd College with Professor Margaret Rigg. It has remained my passion ever since. Writing is my art and my vocation.”
During her career, she has rendered several handwritten manuscripts including “Random Quotations”, “Five Wang Wei Poems” and “Tao Te Ching” in translation. Among Ruth’s major works was a large series, “Sonnets of William Shakespeare, 154 Sonnets,” where she skillfully incorporated a variety of papers, lettering and illustration styles.
The works in this exhibition are contemplative, elegant and vigorous. The artworks are written with ink and brush on Arches cold press paper, and each measure 20 x 32” framed. Each work contains a gold stamped ‘dot’ somewhere within the composition, almost as a personal acknowledgement that the work is complete.
The exhibition is on view through August 1st. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 11am-6pm. Events are free and open to the public.
