The USF Alumni Association has named four outstanding University of South Florida 2015 Alumni Awards recipients. A fifth recipient, the Outstanding Young Alumnus, will be announced at a later date.
Professional accomplishments and personal service were the criteria for selecting these honorees as representatives of the university’s core values of student success, community engagement and global impact. All five USF Alumni Award recipients will be honored Oct. 8 during a dinner in the Marshall Student Center Ballroom, USF Tampa.
The 2015 award recipients are:
George D. Morgan, Accounting `76 – Distinguished Alumnus Award
Recognizing a USF alumnus who has reached the pinnacle of success in his career
George D. Morgan has enjoyed a long and successful career in the health-care industry. He retired in 2007 as executive vice president and COO of US Oncology, Inc., one of the nation’s largest cancer treatment and research networks, only to return to work for a year, in 2012, as CEO of Virtual Radiologic (vRad), a national radiology practice and the world’s largest telemedicine company (now being acquired by Mednax, Inc.).
Under Morgan’s leadership, US Oncology grew, mostly organically, from $1.5 billion to more than $3 billion in annual revenue. He previously held executive roles at HCA, the world’s largest private operator of health-care facilities, and at Mariner Health and OrNda HealthCorp. Morgan also spent more than 10 years in public accounting, mostly with the health-care practice of Price Waterhouse.
A very generous and involved supporter of USF throughout his career, Morgan currently serves as vice chairman of the USF Foundation board of directors and on the USF Muma College of Business Executive Advisory Council. He is a Life Member of the USF Alumni Association. He and his wife, Jane, a member of USF’s Women in Leadership & Philanthropy, now live in Lakewood Ranch to be closer to USF.
Lynn Pippenger, MBA `88 – Distinguished Alumna Award
Recognizing a USF alumna who has reached the pinnacle of success in her career
Lynn Pippenger began working as a payroll clerk at Raymond James & Associates in 1969 and retired 43 years later as senior vice president for operations and administration management and consultant to senior management for integration of business practices and technology. Along the way, her continuous innovations helped transform the fledgling brokerage firm into a global financial services company employing more than 7,900 employees and 6,400 financial advisors with client assets totaling $505 billion.
A few of her contributions, in addition to the operations and administrative functions, include creating the firm’s human resources department, launching the internal educational program now called “Raymond James University,” and helping create the company’s information technology department.
A great believer in education, she worked to incorporate economic studies into Florida’s K-12 public schools and contributed to USF in myriad ways, including serving on the Muma College of Business’ advisory board and the USF Economics Advisory Council. The Muma College of Business’ Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy bears her name in recognition of her extremely generous financial gifts.
Richard Lane, Management `68 – Donald A. Gifford Service Award
Recognizing a USF graduate who has provided countless hours of service to USF
From organizing USF Alumni Chapters and Homecoming festivities to leading the USF Alumni Association and the Bulls Club athletic boosters, Richard Lane has been an ardent supporter of his alma mater for almost 50 years.
Lane is president, owner and founder of InsureTek Insurance Associates. He earned his MBA at the Wharton School of Finance in 1970, then moved to New York City, where he promptly helped found USF’s first Big Apple alumni chapter. He returned to the Tampa Bay area in 1976, starting his 40-year insurance career in Clearwater. He moved his business to Tampa in 1992, founding Lane & Associates Insurance Services, which later became InsureTek.
He served as an Alumni Association volunteer leader starting in 1985, helping develop early alumni fundraising programs, and served as Association president in 1992. He continues his support as an Association Life Member and Emerald Donor.
Lane has been a USF Athletics supporter since 1976, when the Bulls started Division I play in the then-new Sun Belt Conference. He has been a member of the Bulls Club board of directors since 1981 and served as president in 1991. He supports USF student-athletes as an Iron Bull scholarship donor.
He is most proud of being a USF Football “First Teamer” – a member of the group that worked to bring football to the USF.
Bob McCann – Class of `56 Award
Recognizing a non-USF graduate who has provided outstanding service to USF and the Tampa Bay community
Thanks to the tireless vision of Bob McCann, retired executive vice president of The Nielsen Co., USF now has access to Nielsen’s wealth of data about consumers’ shopping and media behavior in more than 100 countries. The real-time information allows USF faculty and students to tackle research with real-world implications in a number of fields, and gives students experience working with massive data sets – the stuff of what today is termed “Big Data.”
This access is one element of the USF/Nielsen Alliance, a commercial and academic partnership that is unique in the United States and was formed with McCann’s help in 2010. The Alliance also encompasses student mentoring, executive lectures, hosting of annual multi-company job fairs, philanthropic support for scholarships, advisory board participation, tours of Nielsen’s Global Technology Center, which employs more than 3,000 professionals in the Tampa Bay area, and most importantly, the hiring of hundreds of USF students since the Alliance was formed.
Bob has been an enthusiastic promoter of USF in the business community and across the region, as well as among Tallahassee’s legislators. In addition to having been a longtime executive of Nielsen, Bob is a former partner at Booz Allen & Hamilton and earlier a marketing executive with Colgate-Palmolive. Until recently he was a member of the USF Foundation board of directors and a past chair of the Muma College of Business’ Executive Advisory Council.
