Over 50,000 homes in 50 years through self-help housing program
(RUSKIN, FL – 6/10/15) –June marks National Home Ownership Month, and one community in Southern Hillsborough County has much to celebrate.
2015 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the national USDA Rural Self Help Housing Program, and in that time, over 50,000 homes have been
built. Since the inception of the program half a century ago, nearly $3 billion in low interest loans have been funded across the nation. Locally, Florida Home Partnership has assisted over 700 low-income families, veterans and seniors in achieving the dream of home ownership over the
past 21 years.
In recognition of this 50 Years/50,000 Homes milestone, Florida Home Partnership will host a commemorative groundbreaking ceremony as construction
commences on its latest development, to be held on Saturday, June 27 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Bayou Pass Village 4 subdivision, 1414 Blossom Bayou Circle in Ruskin. Guests in
attendance will include current and future self-help homeowners; local, state and federal legislators (including representatives from USDA Rural
Development); financial supporters; FHP board members; associates and staff. Homeowners from all FHP developments through the last 21 years are invited to
attend and celebrate this occasion.
Florida Home Partnership is one of only two nonprofit agencies in the State of Florida, along with another 100 agencies across the country, which
administers the USDA Self-Help Home Ownership Program. Low income individuals and families qualify for this program by meeting income requirements and
committing to a minimum 600 hours of sweat equity that serves as a down payment for their new home.
“Having a home that you’ve helped build with your own hands in a safe, comfortable neighborhood builds a strong community,” said Earl Pfeiffer, Executive Director of Florida Home Partnership. “We’re grateful for our solid partnership with USDA through their Mutual
Self-Help Housing program, providing home ownership opportunities for those who may not have otherwise realized the dream of becoming a homeowner, and
celebrate this 50 Years/50,000 Homes milestone.”
