Funds Will Support Home Repairs for 55 Area Veterans
TAMPA, FL – Today, Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay announced it has received a $250,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation to support its Home Repairs to Support Our Veterans program, a collaborative effort with Support the Troops. The grant will fund critical home repairs that will provide healthier and safer homes for 55 veterans in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.
This effort is a part of The Home Depot’s ongoing dedication to improve the homes and lives of U.S. military veterans and their families. Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force, has transformed more than 17,000 homes for veterans across the country in the last four years. Giving back to veterans is personal to The Home Depot, as more than 35,000 of the company’s associates have served in the military.
“We are excited and honored to have The Home Depot supporting our efforts to help veteran homeowners live in a safer and healthier environment,” said Carol Austin, Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay’s Board President. “We look forward to having members of Team Depot help in these efforts and hope other groups will join us as well as we work to improve housing for those who have served us all,” said Austin.
The first home repairs of the new initiative were completed on May 16 to mark Armed Forces Day. The efforts included improvements to the home of a local Vietnam veteran who served in both the Navy and Marine Corps. During his service, he lost his right eye and his leg was amputated below the knee. Licensed subcontractors worked together to complete interior drywall work to repair damage caused by roof leakage, while volunteers painted the exterior and cleaned his yard.
“Support the Troops is honored to partner with two exceptional organizations to ensure that our veterans – who so proudly served – get to stay in their homes. Team Depot’s commitment to take care of our veterans is an exceptional testimony to their patriotism and is truly appreciated by those who served,” said Mark VanTrees, Support the Troops’ Executive Director.
As more veterans and their home repair needs are identified, Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay is hoping to have other organizations join The Home Depot Foundation to provide much needed services to our local heroes. Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay and Support the Troops are committed to delivering safer and healthier homes for years to come.
