(Lakeland, FL. May 18, 2015) GEICO of Lakeland was awarded the 2015 Donor Group Achievement Award at the 69th Annual Florida Association of Blood Banks meeting recently held in Sarasota. Liz Hedge, Blood Drive Chairperson and TCR2 Supervisor at GEICO, accepted the award.
GEICO of Lakeland started hosting blood drives in 1993 as part of their service to the community. As they grew, so did their commitment to sponsoring multiday blood drives on campus 5 to 6 times annually. Not only does GEICO host blood drives they often make them themed events and provide drawing prizes to make them more fun. In addition, technology now allows donors, based on their blood type, to ‘Target Their Type’ by giving automated donations of the specific blood components of red cells or platelets and plasma to best serve patient needs. GEICO has embraced this evolution so that their employee donors now have the choice to give whole blood, automated double red cells or platelet donations during their blood drive campaigns. Throughout these years of blood drive sponsorship 12,620 donations have been given so far, saving or sustaining tens of thousands of lives and families!
Generally healthy people age 16 or older who weigh at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Photo ID is required. All donors receive a wellness check-up of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron count, including a cholesterol screening. The summer months are a time of increased need for blood donations. School is out, families are traveling and the heat is on, all of which impact our local blood supply. Did you know that if those who donate blood or platelets once or twice a year donated just one additional time, we could prevent our community from facing critical blood shortages?
Therefore, to boost the blood supply OneBlood is sponsoring the ‘2 From You’ Summer 2015 campaign. Every time a donor gives blood or platelets twice between May 1 and August 31, 2015, they will receive an entry to win one of twenty AMAZING giveaways! Prizes include Televisions, iPads and Apple Watches! For official rules visit oneblood.org/2FromYou
Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. Blood that is donated today will likely be transfused into a patient within two to three days. The turn-around is that fast, the need is constant.
