Tampa, Fla., Jan. 9, 2015 – Burr & Forman LLP is pleased to announce that its Tampa managing partner, William (Bill) J. Schifino, Jr., has become the president-elect designate of The Florida Bar, putting him in line to become president of the 100,000-member organization in 2016.
“Bill’s tremendous commitment to the legal profession, evidenced by his significant resume of bar-related leadership positions, is admirable, and we are proud of his dedication to serving Florida’s attorneys through this new role,” said Lee Thuston, firmwide managing partner of Burr & Forman. “Our firm has benefited from Bill’s thoughtful leadership and strategic perspective, both of which have, and will continue to, further the mission of The Florida Bar.”
Schifino’s goals for his year as Florida Bar president include engaging the state’s attorneys on top issues impacting the legal industry, improving access to justice for all Floridians, and improving the justice system across the board, specifically the judicial independence and additional funding for courts, as well as public defenders and state attorneys, whose offices face extremely high annual turnover rates.
“On these issues, we should not have divergent goals,” Schifino said. “My goal is to engage and utilize the incredible resources of legal leaders throughout the state. We must reach common ground on our core issues and rely on all Florida Bar members to affect positive change. Uniting this effort will be my goal.”
At Burr & Forman, Schifino focuses his practice on commercial litigation, including securities, intellectual property, and business tort litigation. He litigates and arbitrates complex business disputes before Federal and State Courts, and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc. He also serves on the firm’s Executive Committee.
In the community, Schifino serves on the board of trustees for his alma mater, the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law. He is an active member of the Tampa Bay Partnership, the CEO of Council Bay, and he was a former leader for many years in both the Boys and Girls Club, and the Tampa Bay Little League.
Schifino is certified by The Florida Bar as a specialist in Business Litigation Law. He is also frequently recognized by his peers with accolades from Florida Trend’s Legal Elite and Super Lawyers. He has been included in Best Lawyers in America for commercial litigation annually since 2008, was named “Lawyer of the Year” for securities litigation in Tampa in 2014.
Schifino earned his undergraduate degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, and his law degree from the University of Florida.
