BRADENTON, Fla. (December 8, 2014) – Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is one of the first medical practices in the United States to offer a new, innovative, FDA-approved procedure for total ankle replacement. The practice’s foot and ankle specialist, James Cottom, DPM, now offers the new INFINITY® Total Ankle Replacement (TAR) System, providing patients in need of a total ankle replacement with an implant that is custom-made for their individual anatomy.
Utilizing a smaller, fully-customized implant, this new technology is less invasive for surrounding joints and presents patients with several advantages over other FDA-approved total ankle replacements including less overall bone loss and shorter procedure times. The result is a surgical solution that both reduces or eliminates ankle pain and improves mobility. Most patients are walking with a protected cast or boot three to four weeks after the surgery and are in shoes with an ankle brace within six to eight weeks.
“The INFINITY® implant is the only FDA-approved implant with this technology,” said Dr. Cottom. “These implants conserve bone and I’ve found that the process is extremely successful for my patients. Overall, this technology provides more flexibility and allows me the opportunity to offer patients a better continuum of care.”
Last year, more than 6,000 Americans underwent total ankle implant surgery, which is often the result of severe ankle arthritis. Not all patients with arthritis are appropriate candidates for total ankle replacement, and surgeons like Dr. Cottom must take into account a patient’s age, weight, and activity level.
Dr. Cottom specializes in providing innovative surgical and non-surgical techniques to patients, and has been in practice for nearly 10 years.
