Annual 5K Run/Walk benefits college scholarships in memory of beloved soccer player
Sarasota–The 2nd Annual Andrew Monroe Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 on Siesta Key Beach at 8 a.m. Proceeds will provide college scholarships for local soccer players. Participants also are asked to bring non-perishable food items for the Mayor’s Feed the Hungry Program.
Andrew Monroe was a stellar goalkeeper for Riverview High School and tragically died in an automobile accident on March 13, 2011. In honor of his life, the run/walk was established for the benefit of senior soccer players at Riverview High School. Senior girl and boy soccer players have the opportunity to receive college scholarships through an essay process. The event also supports the Andrew Monroe Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. This college scholarship is available to all Sarasota County soccer players.
“Soccer was so important to Andrew and he was always devoted to his team and team mates. That is why we created these scholarship funds,” said Stacey Monroe, Andrew’s mother. “The 5K Run/Walk will help us continue the legacy in Andrew’s honor.”
The inaugural run/walk was attended by over 300 participants with ages ranging from grade school to senior citizens. Early discounted registration is happening now for this year’s event and is available by visiting www.andrewmonroe.com. Registration also is available on race day between 6:30 and 8 a.m.
“Andrew did not have the opportunity to pursue his dreams, so with these scholarship funds we hope to help other young adults realize their goals in life,” Monroe said. “One of his greatest qualities was compassion. We want that spirit to thrive for years to come,” she said.
