MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Dec. 2, 2014) – A soft-spoken custodian known for her outstanding work ethic and warm smile has been named 2014 Manatee County Employee of the Year.
Cathy Cruz, a Property Management custodian for the past seven years, was selected for the honor and recognized at today’s regular meeting of the Manatee County Commission. Property Management Director Charlie Bishop (pictured below, presenting the award to Cathy Cruz) said Cruz is an incredibly dedicated employee who epitomizes the County’s commitment to customer service.
Cruz, a native of Guam who emigrated to the U.S. in 2001, has worked with Manatee County since 2007. For several years she was a custodian at the Public Safety Building but she took over custodial duties at the Manatee County Historic Courthouse last year. Paula Pesmark, Cruz’s supervisor, said Cruz was “able to keep employees happy with all the dust settling” during an extensive renovation project at the Courthouse.
“The Historic Courthouse has always been clean, but when Cathy took over it actually smelled clean,” said John Howard, a Manatee County senior building trade worker who nominated Cruz. “There’s a lot of drive and zero quit in her. She’s done wonders in that building.”
Accepting the award Cathy thanked her heavenly Father, coworkers and her supervisor, her husband, seven sons and extended family, many of whom were on hand for the presentation.
“I’m a quiet person, so I don’t like spotlights like today,” Cathy told Commissioners this morning. “I come to work each day and do it to the best of my ability. It’s special working for Manatee County; I’m deeply honored.”
