St. Petersburg, Fla. (December 1, 2014) – Congratulations to St. Pete graphic artist Rey Borges, whose colorful design has been chosen as the official image for The Mahaffey’s upcoming 50th Anniversary year!
Rey, a New York native who’s called the bay area home for the past 25 years, titled his work The Theater Experience. “The thought process for me was to simply capture the experience of walking through the theater in anticipation of a spectacular event onstage,” he says. “The grand atmosphere inside The Mahaffey Theater, paired with its beautiful location along the vibrant waterfront of St. Petersburg, was my true inspiration!”
As the winner of our Anniversary Poster Contest, Rey receives a cash prize of $2,500 from the Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts; his work will represent the theater, and the anniversary season, on a wide variety of promotional materials. The original piece will be on view in the lobby of The Mahaffey throughout 2015, and limited edition poster reproductions will be available for purchase at the theater.
We received so many great submissions that it was hard to choose a favorite! In fact, we liked Debbie Mitri’s mixed-media/exotic wood intarsia piece so much we decided to give her Honorable Mention, and award her a $500 prize!
Many thanks to all the great artists who entered!
