Bradenton, Florida- Dr Eric Folkens MD, owner and operator of Bradenton/Lakewood Ranch/Sarasota Urgent Care Clinics has been chosen to serve on the Health Council of West Central Florida (HCWCF) for a term to expire September 30, 2016. Dr. Folkens has been reappointed to the seat designated for a Non-Governmental Health Care Provider.
Health Council of West Central Florida, Inc. is a non-profit community health planning agency serving Polk, Hillsborough, Highlands, Hardee and Manatee County. The Health Council’s mission is to improve population at the local level by planning for health care services; educating local residents about community health concerns; and developing programs and services to meet unique and emergent health care needs.
Health Council activities include: 1. Producing ‘health profiles’ to describe the health status of local residents; 2. Conducting issue-specific assessments to determine areas of unmet need; 3. Maintaining health insurance coverage for People Living with HIV/AIDS; 4. Securing free prescription medications to treat the chronic health conditions of low-income uninsured/under-insured residents; and 5. Using smartphone (‘mHealth’) technology to promote healthy behaviors and improve population health of local residents.
Members of the board of directors of the Health Council are appointed by the Boards of County Commission from each of the counties in the planning district. Board members are appointed to specific member categories to make sure the needs of all residents are adequately represented. Member categories include health care providers – like Dr. Folkens, health care purchasers – individuals that purchase health services on behalf of a group, and health care consumers who are neither providers nor purchasers of health care services.
